Alla scoperta di Vadena

Just 14 km from Lake Caldaro and 15 km from Bolzano, Vadena is a small but charming South Tyrolean municipality located on the Wine Road, west of the Adige River, at the foot of Monte di Mezzo. With around 1,000 inhabitants, Vadena has a rich history dating back over a thousand years, with its name first appearing in documents as early as 860 AD.

Agriculture is the main activity here: fruit growing dominates the plains, while vineyards cover the sunny slopes of Monte di Mezzo, especially in the Campi al Lago area. This is also where the Laimburg Research Centre is located, famous for its “Felsenkeller” wine cellar carved into the rock, open to the public on special occasions.

Among the must-see sights are the ruins of Castelchiaro, overlooking Lake Caldaro. This lake is one of the largest and warmest in the Alps, making it a paradise for water sports such as windsurfing, sailing, swimming, boating, and fishing in summer, and an enchanting natural ice skating rink in winter.

Vadena is ideal for cyclists thanks to the Adige Cycle Path, which connects Bolzano, Merano, Trento, and Lake Caldaro. For hikers, nearby Monte Laives offers scenic trails and the challenging Alta Via di Laives, with breathtaking views of the Sciliar, Catinaccio, and Latemar mountains.

In winter, the ski resorts of Val Gardena, Alpe di Siusi, Obereggen, Carezza, and Corno del Renon are just a short drive away, offering skiing, snowshoeing, and ski mountaineering.
